Central Ledger

Central ledgers are both physical books and digital files used by individuals and organizations. They are used to record and gather economic transactions in a centralized way on the contrary of decentralized ledgers, aka DLT.

The central ledgers are the most used way to record and confirm the ownership of legal status, political rights, legal identity, and assets from the past till the day.

Central Ledger’s Use Cases

Generally, a central ledger is used by businesses’ accounting departments to record financial analysis of all economic activities in which the company is involved, tax reporting, and more. Although this method is effective, it also has disadvantages. These could be making them vulnerable to any mistakes made by those authorities, either intentionally or accidentally, which could arise from relying on a central authority to manage the ledger.

Distributed Ledger Technology

Distributed ledger technology is a new way of the ledger concept that aims to decentralize the bookkeeping process and eliminate centralized authority. Bitcoin’s blockchain is one of the most successful examples of a decentralized ledger.

The Impact of Central Ledgers

Central ledgers are considered the most widely used data storage mechanism. The primary responsibilities of these ledgers are to ensure the accuracy of the recorded data and the appropriate monitoring of capital assets. At the same time, centralized record-keeping methods are based on a trusted authority.

Blockchain technology, on the other hand, does not use this ledger format.

What About Decentralized Ledgers?

In the decentralized ledger, there is no single operator or central data store. A distributed ledger database consists of a record of entities that can be linked to servers of sites, countries, or organizations. Each member of a network can have its own version of registration.

Decentralized ledgers can contain more information than central ledgers. Decentralized ledgers are not produced, managed, or stored by a single central unit.
